Responding to a new report from Women’s Budget Group, Joe Levenson, Director of Communications and Campaigns for Young Women’s Trust said:
“As a country we need to stop viewing care as an expense while construction is seen as an investment.
“For too long investment in construction has not only meant jobs for the boys, but has also been at the expense of investing in our social infrastructure which is largely reliant on women who are either providing their time for free or who are underpaid and undervalued.
“Women have been the backbone of the response to the coronavirus crisis; missing work, picking up even more childcare duties and putting themselves on the line as vital key workers. In the last few months women have also been more likely to lose work and be anxious about what the future holds for them. They will be listening closely to the Prime Minister’s announcement today to find out what’s in it for them, how the Government is going to ensure equality isn’t set back further and how they are going to be at the heart of this country’s recovery.”
