This July, Facebook’s policies for addressing hate speech are under increasing global scrutiny as big businesses boycott advertising on the platform.
In response Young Women’s Trust has joined a number of charities working together to address hate speech on social media and will be joining a charity sector working group to look into these issues.
We will be pulling back on all new advertising on Facebook for the month of July but will continue adverts for Work it Out – a vital coaching and job application support service for young women.
Sophie Walker, Chief Executive of Young Women’s Trust said:
“Facebook’s policies for addressing hate speech are under increasing global scrutiny as big businesses boycott advertising on the platform.
At Young Women’s Trust we have joined other UK charities to pause any new paid-for Facebook campaigns during the month of July, take stock of what’s happening and reflect on recommendations for change.
We are committed to encouraging and fostering respectful debate so that young women feel able to express their opinions and we look forward to working with other UK charities on how social media platforms might better create that space.”
